TrackBack and RSS

Staying on theme...

I see MT's TrackBack has the ability to generate some RSS output, but it doesn't actually look like RSS (as in, I don't think you could just subscribe your aggregator to it).

Here's what I have in mind. I want to know whenever someone pings any of my pages. I register with the TrackBack server a pattern like http://radio.weblogs.com/0107808/*

Whenever someone pings a page under that URL it gets added to a dynamic RSS feed with a URL generated for me. I can subscribe to that feed in Radio and see all the trackback pings appear as news items.

If I'm interested in who is writing about things Dave is saying I might add a pattern http://www.scripting.com/* and get his TrackBack results as well.

Does MT's TrackBack do this already? I couldn't really tell what it's RSS was doing...

Implementing trackback services

Radio Tip: TrackBack tutorial ~ Homebrew TrackBack Tutorial Got this from Whump.com. If you have TrackBack Envy (I do), here's your revenge:

"It's easy for a non-Movable Type weblog to send trackback pings. They use a REST interface:

http://foo.com/mt/mt-tb.cgi?tb_id=ID&;title=TITLE&url=URL

So you can write a bookmarklet that 'does the right thing' if you know the site's base URL.

Trackback supports a few more parameters in the URL so you can send a summary of the reply, and the name of the site sending the ping."
Over at Hit-or-Miss, they've been building their own Trackback server in PHP and MySQL."

[Dog News: radio questions] [From DWS Radio FAQ]

» Can someone explain to me what the tb_id part of the URL is?

I'm still not convinced by MT TrackBack. But I shall certainly try and support the current interface in my own TrackBack server implementation.

MyRadio gets ENT

myRadio supports ENT 1.0. My supports

Announcing the release of ENT 1.0 (Easy News Topics) support in myRadio. One of the stated goals of ENT is to "represent topics sufficiently that they be useful in enabling smart aggregators (e.g. filtering, recombining feeds, etc...)". RSS+ENT feeds can be filtered in myRadio, by selecting topics of interest.

Available topics for a feed are those seen by the aggregator, in the RSS feed. That list will grow in time. Later, myRadio will support topicRolls for this purpose. Future features may also include recombining feeds according to topic.

Update myRadio.root in RU, or download the latest here. Configure using the "Edit Topics" link in the myRadio navigation bar. Please contact me with any feedback, suggestions, and bug reports.

Currently, the only known feeds supporting ENT 1.0 are Curiouser and curiouser and Topic Exchange. ENT enabled feeds should increase greatly when liveTopics 1.3.3 is released. [Brain Off]

Fantastic news. Well done Mikel.

This will be the first application in the hands of users that will let them get the benefit of topics in their feeds. liveTopics 1.1.3 is in beta at the moment and should be available soon. Once that happens there will be a small cluster of feeds that do support ENT. But we need to do more.

Specifically we need to find a way to get at the hordes of MovableType users and get them in the game.

Call for help: Cross domain scripting

We've run into a problem implementing the MovableType client for k-collector:

Our approach has been to bootstrap development by reusing a lot of the Radio client code (moved onto the k-collector server) and having the MT client call that as far as possible. We made some good progress this way however we've hit a snag. When the server side code needs to send information back to MovableType we hit the 'ol Javascript same origin policy problem.

What we need is a way for the pages serverd by MovableType to allow the pages from k-collector access to some of their properties but without having to use signed pages (which appears to be a minefield). Since the one should be allowed to trust the other I am hoping there is a way. Is there?

Trackbacks data in RSS?

I'd like an easy way to ping a trackbackable item when I post in Radio. It seems to me that the easiest way to achieve this would be to have the trackback id embedded in the RSS item (much like the GUID is). This would allow me to pre-load the URL to ping when posting a commentary on an item.

Has someone already come up with an extension for doing this?

Update

My thanks to Phil Ringnalda who sent me the link to the trackback module for RSS which provides a way to associate the trackback ping url with an item in a feed. Exactly what I was looking for! However when I checked my copy of MovableType I notice that the module is not used by either the 1.0 or 2.0 templates (at least as of 2.63).

What gives?

K-Collector client for MT update

Over the weekend I finished the basic K-Collector client for
MovableType. It's still a little rough around the edges,
unoptimized and what have you, but it seems to work here.
In the first instance we're looking for a handful of MT users who are
technically savvy (happy installing perl modules, CGI & don't mind
mucking about with their templates and such) to do the testing, then
we'll open it out when we are sure we have any problems locked down.

If you would like to be part of this first group please drop us a line.
More MovableType tricksyness

Okay so I am trying to customise a MovableType template and have hit a
snag. I can include my customisations to the edit_entry.tmpl
using the <TMPL_INCLUDE> directive and this works okay.
However I need to put a dynamic url into the included HTML, the Url
coming from a configuration file supplied with our tool. And this
is where I am having problems.

There doesn't seem to be a way of doing this from the template language
that I can find (please tell me if i'm wrong) so my next idea was to
write a simple MT plug-in to return the Url for me. That way I
could include the plugin to my template and all would be well.

Except it looks like MT doesn't interpolate custom plugins when
processing the editing template. I just see the tag (I tested
with the <MTServerUptime> example) embedded in the output, not
the content it should represent.

This seems like such a simple thing to want to do. Can anyone help me?
