Recommendations for Mice and Keyboards

My friend Martin Hall has transitioned to the Mac and is looking for recommended applications as well as mice & keyboards:

I just got an Apple MacBook (13" Black) after a lengthy hiatus from using Macs -- what are the programs and/or gadgets that make the most sense to use -- and have. I think that I need a good mouse and keyboard. Any ideas? What are some of the best utilities?

He already knows about TextMate and, I hope, Quicksilver which are two indespensible apps. I continue to recommend the Logitech MX-R mouse but I can't, in all honesty, recommend the Apple external keyboard I am using.

I'd be interested in recommendations of external keyboards (and why you think they are good).
